Creekside High Learning Garden Project
Thanks to the City of Irvine Afterschool Leadership Program under the leadership of Alvia, and the IUSD grounds department (thanks Andy!), what was once an idea to create a school learning garden to teach students about nutrition, sustainable farming practices, and the science behind gardening has become a reality. We are starting our first planting with a salsa garden. Our goal is to expand the garden to include fruit trees, flowers, and to add fencing around the plots to prevent our friendly rabbit population from helping themselves.

Creekside High student’s anti-smoking poster is unveiled at a local bus stop
A Creekside High School student’s artwork is on display at a local intersection after the teen was named one of eight winners in a countywide contest to design anti-smoking posters.
Hannah Esporma’s design, which was one of approximately 100 entries in the “Tobacco and Hollywood” poster contest, was recently unveiled at a bus stop at Alton Parkway and Von Karman Avenue in Irvine.
Collaborating with community leaders, educators and students, the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program sponsored the contest to help young people make informed decisions – and to counter the influence that smoking in films has on youth.

Pertussis Vaccine Requirement
A new California law requires students entering grades seven through 12 to get immunized with a booster shot for pertussis, commonly referred to as “whooping cough.”
In response to a national epidemic, the state passed Assembly Bill 354 back in 2010, mandating that children 10 years and older show proof that they’ve recently received a pertussis vaccination called “Tdap,” which includes boosters for tetanus and diphtheria. Adults are also advised to get the shot if they haven’t already – particularly if they’re around infants.
