MATH FACTS INFORMATION:

If your child needs extra practice, please see the attached links for flash cards and Pairs Practice Tents that can be printed off to use at home.

The first grade standards require students to “master” addition facts (sums to 20) and the corresponding subtraction facts. A student has achieved mastery when they are able to correctly answer math facts within three seconds without counting with manipulatives, fingers and/or in their heads.

Addition methods are listed using the following rubric:

1 - Solves with manipulatives

2 – Counts all with fingers

3 – Counts on with fingers

4 – Counts on by imaging

5 – Part – whole thinking

6 – Recall from long-term memory (instant recall)

Subtraction methods are listed using the following rubric:

1 - Solves with manipulatives

2 – Counts back with fingers

3 – Counts up with fingers

4 – Counts by imaging

5 – Part– whole thinking

6 – Recall from long-term memory (instant recall)

This is an ongoing process. When students are first introduced to a math facts goal, they may need to “count” (see 1- 4 on the rubrics) at first in order understand the concept. Over time and with much practice, the students should be able to move from counting to “part-whole thinking” and instant “recall” (see 5-6 on the rubrics).
