Spring 2009 University High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team
Inaugural Season
The 2009 Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team completed its inaugural season competing for UHS. Head Coach Benson Kong, in his first year coaching Girls Lacrosse was ably assisted by Vanessa Tang & Randy Pinto, both former high school lacrosse players and graduates of Woodbridge High School. Team Captains Alli A., Alex D. & Maddie H. recruited 31 girls to represent UHS on the first year Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team. With the establishment of the Girls Varsity Team, UHS joined Irvine, Northwood & Woodbridge High Schools in fielding a Varsity Girls Team in this growing sport.
Team Schedule
The UHS Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team played a twelve game inaugural season in the Pacific Coast League and competed with San Juan Hills, Laguna Hills, Corona del Mar, Beckman, Woodbridge & Irvine High Schools. The UHS team also participated for the first time in post season play at Irvine’s “Own the City Tournament” on May 2, 2009. The team’s first season Team Banquet is scheduled in June. The great efforts of the team players, coaches, team mom and all the parents who helped start the Girls Varsity Lacrosse at UHS will be honored and recognized.
Team Activities
“All work (or practice in this case) and no play” makes lacrosse not as much fun as it can be. This year the team players got together off the field for several fun activities. The year started off with a Team outing to the UCI vs. UCLA Women’s Lacrosse game at UCI. After the game, the UHS team met the UCI team members at Yogurtland for some great tips and tasty yogurt. The first Team dinner was hosted by Caroline K’s parents at their lovely home. Next up was a Team Potluck picnic at Mason Regional Park with fun and food. Our first season of activities wrapped up with a great Team slumber party at Ann Margaret D’s home.
Team Players
With only two graduating senior players, Taylor M. & Kristen T., most of the ten juniors, six sophomores and thirteen freshmen players from this year’s team will be returning to play next year as experienced players for the Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team. In addition to these experienced players, the Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team was successful in receiving interest sign ups from ten incoming freshmen at the Spring Sports Info Night at UHS for incoming students.

Summer Camps and fall practices are just around the corner as we look forward to the 2009-2010 UHS Girls Varsity Lacrosse Season.
Team Banquet
The UHS Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team celebrated their inaugural season with a Team Banquet on Thursday June 4, 2009. Many players, parents and friends attended the event held at the Student Center at Mariners Church. After a tasty Italian dinner and dessert, certificates, awards and varsity letters were presented to the players. The Team also presented Team photos to the Coaches and Team Mom. A photo of the team players at the Banquet is shown below.
