Fifth
Grade Curriculum
Alderwood 5th graders will experience a balanced, spiraling and challenging curriculum. A variety of individual and cooperative group and hands-on activities will thoroughly cover state and district mandated standards in all subject areas. In addition, 5th graders will be enriched through relevant field trips and multifaceted projects that will integrate a variety of learning skills and stretch students vertically and horizontally to provide for individual differences and expectations. A brief summary of curricular areas follows: Math—Alderwood students use both the Scott Foresman and Houghton Mifflin texts which provide an excellent balance between understanding and applying math concepts and the necessary drill and practice needed to master operations. Projects and enrichment activities include: "The Ticker Tape Rally" (a highly integrated group stock market unit), Pollyhedraville (a geometry unit that focuses on the relationship among geometric figures, specifically three dimensional polyhedra made from two dimensional polygons. Students experience the properties of geometric figures and the opportunity to develop geometric insights and spatial reasoning). Mountain Math provides an excellent source of review and practice. Math journals and problem solving activities are a weekly part of the program. Students also receive drill and practice in mental math and an on the calculator. Language Arts—Students will practice and develop their writing skills in the 4 major domains (informative, persuasive, expressive and narrative) utilizing the UCI Writing Project format. Language and punctuation skills are stressed throughout the year. Students develop oral communication skills through a variety of activities (speeches, group oral presentations, etc.) The Rebecca Sitton based district spelling provides an excellent program for developing and improving spelling skills. Journals are utilized in both math and writing activities. Reading will focus on developing skills, reviewing phonics and comprehension. A major goal will be to develop an interest and enjoyment in reading. Studies have clearly shown the correlation between students who read between 30 to 60 minutes a day and test scores; the correlation is dramatic. A variety of quality novels will be utilized throughout the year in class. These outstanding novels have been carefully selected and integrate with concepts in other curricular areas as defined by the state and district. In addition, reading incentive programs such as "Book It" are on going throughout the year. Twice a week the RT (school wide silent reading) will require students to read silently in a book of their choice. Social Studies—5th graders study a variety of identified units: diversity of cultures, maps, North American Indians, European Exploration and Settlement, Colonial America, The Revolutionary War and Westward Expansion). In addition students will complete various projects on North American Indians, Colonization and do a famous person or president research paper. The on site Printing Press on Wheels field trip enriches the social studies curriculum. Technology—The implementation and use of technology will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum through the use of word processing, researching on the Internet, using a date base, spreadsheet, and PowerPoint. Fifth graders will learn to effectively use technology and see that it is an integral and invaluable component of the learning process. Students will also learn and reinforce skills in the computer lab twice a week. A major focus of the computer lab is to enhance keyboarding efficiency and speed as well as develop computer-related skills. Computer lab activities will challenge students to improve and enhance their computer skills. This year all computers in the lab will be wired and connected to the district server and Internet allowing an even greater opportunity for challenging students. P.E/ Health—Alderwood 5th graders will participate in 200 minutes of physical fitness activities every 10 days. The focus will be on conditioning Group games and activities will foster teamwork and sportsmanship as well as develop grade level motor skills. A major focus of the 5th grade program is preparation for the state mandated Physical Fitness Test. The students will also combine for health once a week. Units on diet, fitness, body systems, substance abuse and smoking will be areas of focus. Direct instruction will be provided in each area in meaningful and enjoyable presentations to develop an understanding of a healthy lifestyle concept and foster a foundation for habits that will enhance their lives now and in the future. Field Trips—There are field trips scheduled for Crystal Cove, Modjeska Canyon, The Performing Arts Center, and the on campus field trip "Printing Press on Wheels". The cost, including transportation, for these trips is approximately $80. These field trips enrich and supplement the curriculum and some have been mentioned under their curricular category. Science—Students receive Science twice a week. This is taught through the district and provides a science specialist, Mrs. Ellerman. The focus is on the scientific method, and a real hands on approach is provided making science come alive. A major activity for 5th graders is the challenging but very worthwhile science project. Our field trips to Crystal Cove and Modjeska Canyon will enrich the science program Art—Students will receive art instruction by a specialist (Mrs. Miller) 6 to 10 times during the year. This is a wonderful opportunity allowing students to develop artistic skills and learn about the components and strategies involved in art. It is easy to see the results of this program. Alderwood students excel artistically and learn the value and enjoyment that is found in art and utilizing the right side of the brain to balance the more linear left side. Students with a strong art foundation are more likely to be strong academically. Music—Alderwood students receive music twice a week and make a choice as to their area of interest (from vocal to the choice of an instrument). The music staff does wonderful job in developing and fostering the joy of music. Alderwood musicians are given many opportunities to perform and display their skills. GATE—Gate students will be challenged qualitatively and quantitatively in a variety of modalities to foster academic, social and leadership skills. Literature units designed specifically for GATE students along with Spectrum Math (level 8) will be used within the classroom setting. Bonus spelling words will also be a part of the curriculum and assigned on a weekly basis. In addition, GATE students will meet twice a week with the media specialist for appropriate units, activities and projects. Many opportunities arise within the classroom setting for them to practice and utilize a variety of social and leadership skills (cooperative group activities, etc.). Individual Educational Plans will be designed for each student to reflect the intended goals and meet individual needs. The 5th grade staff takes a great deal of pride in the program we offer all children. We enjoy the challenge and feel the commitment and need to maintain the excellence that has been established. We enjoy the support of parents as partners in the educational process and appreciate all the help and service Alderwood parents provide. |
