OPEN/CLOSED CAMPUS – STUDENTS

BOARD POLICY - 5112.5

In order to provide a supervised, safe and orderly environment, the Irvine Unified School District maintains closed campuses at all schools. One of the goals of the District is to assist students in developing a high degree of self-direction and personal responsibility. To this end, the Board of Education, per Education Code 44808.5, can authorize high school students to leave campus during the lunch period.

Students shall not leave the school grounds at any time during the school day without prior written permission of their parents/guardians and school authorities. Students who leave school without authorization shall be classified truant and subject to disciplinary action. The privilege of open campus may be revoked from individual students for disciplinary reasons.

The District, its employees and officers are not liable for the safety and conduct of students who leave under this policy. Student handbooks and the parent permission forms shall fully explain all rules and disciplinary procedures involved in lunch release and the maintenance of closed campuses.
