Differential standards are modifications determined
to be appropriate by the Individual Education Planning (I.E.P.) team to
provide the opportunity for a special education student to successfully
attain the district's regular proficiency standards.
Special education students who are working toward a diploma
and have not demonstrated evidence of ability to complete the district's
regular proficiency standards with appropriate educational services and
support shall be provided with differential standards through the I.E.P.
process. When necessary, the I.E.P. team shall develop differential proficiency
standards appropriate to the student's needs and potential. These differential
standards shall be included in the student's individualized education program.
No student shall be classified as eligible for differential
standards of proficiency for the purpose of circumventing the legal requirement
to maintain academic eligibility for extracurricular or cocurricular activities.
If the I.E.P. team makes a determination that a student
is unable to achieve the district graduation requirements with differential
standards in place, the I.E.P. team may recommend that the student will
receive a "letter of recommendation" upon completion of the last semester
of high school. A determination made bv the I.E.P. team for a student to
receive a letter of recommendation should be clearly noted on the I.E.P.
document
