REPORTING TO PARENTS

Homework Policies

Homework Policies

We believe that homework teaches responsibility and self-discipline, is a means of communication between school and home, reinforces skills taught in the classroom and teaches independent study habits.

We recommend the following guidelines for the amount of time spent on homework:

Kindergarten and First Grade: 10 minutes per night
Grades 2-3: 20 - 30 minutes per night
Grades 4-6: 40 - 60 minutes per night.

These times are exclusive of reading for pleasure every night (20 - 30 minutes), completing any work that may not have been finished in class, and working on long-term projects.

Parents are reminded that individual students work at varying rates and that the above time limits are guidelines. Individual teachers will elaborate on their homework policies and procedures at Back-to-School Night. As always, if you as a parent have a question or concern regarding homework, please contact the teacher.

If your child is absent, you may call the teacher's phone and request the homework. These phone calls should be made prior to the start of the school day and allow the teacher ample time to collect the work.  In most cases, if your child is too sick to be at school, they will be too sick to complete the homework. Teachers will allow time following the child's return to class to make up the missed work.

Independent Study Contracts

Before an extended absence, parents may make arrangements with the teacher for an Independent Study Contract. The process involves a great deal of paperwork and it is absolutely necessary that the teacher receive advance notice of at least a week to prepare the contract.

School/Home Communication

Our commitment is that we will regularly and thoroughly communicate with parents regarding school activities, procedures and student progress. This communication is accomplished through a variety of formally scheduled activities throughout the school year such as Back to School Night and Parent Conferences.

Back-to-School Night

During the first month of school, we schedule a formal evening meeting for the teacher to present the curriculum, policies, and procedures for the year. This is a night for parents only, and a night for the staff to present general information, not specific student progress.

Parent Conferences

These meetings are scheduled two times during the year in October and February. The October conference is to select goals for the student for the year and to review early progress. The second conference is optional and serves as follow up when necessary. Teachers are always available to schedule an individual meeting to discuss a concern or issue.

Progress Reports

Students in grades 4-6 receive a report midway through the trimesters to indicate satisfactory or unsatisfactory progress. The reports are to be signed by the parent and returned to school.

Report Cards

These are issued three times per year to all students. The report card indicates achievement and progress toward content standards and is sent in an envelope.  The envelope is to be signed by the parent and returned to school.
