We believe that homework teaches responsibility and self-discipline, is a means of communication between school and home, reinforces skills taught in the classroom and teaches independent study habits.
We recommend the following guidelines for the amount of time spent on homework:
Kindergarten and First Grade: 10 minutes per night
Grades 2-3: 20 - 30 minutes per night
Grades 4-6: 40 - 60 minutes per night.
These times are exclusive of reading for pleasure every night (20 - 30 minutes), completing any work that may not have been finished in class, and working on long-term projects.
Parents are reminded that individual students work at varying rates and that the above time limits are guidelines. Individual teachers will elaborate on their homework policies and procedures at Back-to-School Night. As always, if you as a parent have a question or concern regarding homework, please contact the teacher.
If your child is absent, you may call the teacher's phone and request the homework. These phone calls should be made prior to the start of the school day and allow the teacher ample time to collect the work. In most cases, if your child is too sick to be at school, they will be too sick to complete the homework. Teachers will allow time following the child's return to class to make up the missed work. |
