Playground Supervision |
The school playground is supervised beginning at 7:55 a.m. on school days. There is no supervision at the end of the day. Children should not arrive before 7:55 a.m. and should be picked up immediately after school. Kindergarten parents must supervise their children before the school day begins. The school grounds/playground are for the sole use of Culverdale students during the school day and are not open to pre-schoolers or older/younger siblings during school hours. |
Parking Lot Safety |
The safety of all students, family members and staff members is our top priority! Our school parking lot and the surrounding streets are very congested at starting and dismissal times; therefore it is critical to the safety of all that parents adhere to these basic rules:
• Follow the posted regulations for parking on the streets surrounding the school.
• When in the parking lot, follow the lanes as marked by the parking signs. The lane closest to the street should be moving at all times.
• Students should exit cars only in the designated drop off zones.
• Parents should remain in the car unless the car is parked in a marked stall. |
Animals on Campus |
For the safety and comfort of our students, animals are not allowed on campus, even if they are on a leash or carried. Some children are afraid of animals or may be allergic to them. |
School Rules |
• Remain in assigned areas.
• Obey and respect teachers, staff and all adults at school.
• Keep hands, feet and objects to self.
• Complete all work assigned and come prepared for school.
• Think safety first. If there is a chance someone might get hurt, don't do it.
• Use only kind words and actions toward others. |
Dress Code |
Dress code guidelines are described in IUSD Policy. Students may not wear any items to school that may be deemed inappropriate, unsafe or disruptive to the educational process.
• Shoes must be school-safe and allow the student to fully participate in school activities. Sandals, platform heels, sling-type shoes, shoes with wheels and “flip-flops” are not allowed. Tennis shoes are the ideal shoes for play and exercise.
• Dangling earrings are dangerous and not appropriate for school.
• Students may not wear shirts or tops that contain offensive or obscene slogans or symbols that promote alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gangs, tagging or violence or that degrade any gender or culture.
• Hats may be worn outside.
• Pants or shorts must be the appropriate size and fit securely at the waist. Clothing must cover the mid-section and undergarments worn as outerwear is not appropriate. Spaghetti-strap tops are not appropriate for girls.
Staff members monitor our student dress code. We believe that the primary responsibility for students’ attire rests with the parents. We will contact you if we believe that a student is dressed inappropriately. |
On-Site Childcare Services |
The Koala Klub provides before and after-school childcare on our campus for parents in need of such services. Their hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. You may contact their office at (949) 786-2921 to obtain enrollment information. |
Lost and Found |
We maintain a large bin to collect lost items at school. The bin is located by the front office and is periodically rolled out to the lunch area at lunchtime. Frequently, it is parked in front of the school so that parents may check for lost items. Unclaimed clothing is donated to charity at the end of the school year and periodically during the year as necessary. We urge parents to label every article sent to school so that items may be returned to the owner. |
Bicycles |
The following rules are in place to protect students if a bicycle is their means of transportation to and from school:
• Only students in grades 3-6 may ride a bicycle to school.
• Helmets must be worn at all times by the rider.
• Bicycles should be licensed through the Irvine Police Department.
• A lock must be used to secure the bike to the rack that is located near the park side of the building. The rack is not supervised during the day.
• The school assumes no responsibility or liability for any damage to, or loss of, the bicycle. |
Medication at School |
For the safety of all, there are several legal requirements that must be followed if your child requires medication during the school day. Unless all steps have been completed, we may not administer any medication at school. These rules apply to all medications - prescription and non-prescription.
• The parent must sign a consent form for the administration of the medication. All forms are available in the school office.
• The physician also must sign a similar form.
• The medication must be in the original pharmacy container, labeled by the pharmacist.
• Parents must deliver the medication to the school office. Never send medication of any kind to school with your child.
• Once at school, the medication is stored in a locked cupboard in the health office and administered by the office staff. |
Student Accident Insurance |
Irvine Unified School District makes available to parents a low cost accident insurance for children. Forms are distributed to parents the first week of school. Additional forms are available throughout the year in the office. |
Emergency Preparedness |
We schedule regular drills to teach children appropriate safety actions in the event of an emergency. Students are taught to evacuate the building and to "duck, cover and hold" to protect themselves in other emergencies such as an earthquake. The school is equipped with First Aid supplies and search and rescue supplies. In addition, staff members are trained in CPR and First Aid and have specific responsibilities in the event of an emergency.
It is a requirement for parents to keep the school fully informed of all contact phone numbers, especially if they change during the school year. In an emergency situation, if students are to be released from school, access to students will be controlled until we have accounted for every child. Parents must come to the rear of the building to request their child and sign out according to procedures. Our school is fully prepared to deal with a major emergency and to provide for the physical and emotional needs of students and their orderly and safe release. |
