Grade Level News

We have been focusing on short vowel words.  Identifying naming words and action words, looking at parts of a story, and talking about the main ideas of stories.  The children have compared stories and learned about cause and effect.

This month in writing the children focused on using the 6-trait of “organization”.  The children have been putting their ideas in order, starting with a good topic sentence.  We are encouraging the children to end with a closing sentence.

In math the children have learned about counting as an addition strategy and drawing pictures to prove the equation is correct.  The children have learned to subtract numbers by using a circle drawing.

In social studies we finished the mapping unit.  The children learned how to use a map legend and directions on a map.  They learned that where you live effects what we do and how we dress.

In science the children have been learning about solids and their properties.  They compared properties of the solids.

In November, the children will be learning many new things.  Some highlights to look forward to are:

• Seeing the relationship with addition and subtraction

• Learning about double consonants, word endings, contractions, and possessions

• Practicing Math fact flashcards

• Starting spelling:  look for the spelling lists each Monday, dictation tests on Fridays

• Continuing science unit on Matter: Liquids and Solids

To help foster a caring community the children learned about “filling a bucket.”  As a school the children will be learning about John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.  It focuses on successful character building.  Students that have demonstrated one of the Pyramid of Success qualities and have received a compliment are eligible for a school wide raffle to be recognized at Monday Morning Meeting.
