November 2009
Our test philosophy
As you have noticed your teacher lets you know when math tests will occur. In third grade we feel that students can start to learn study strategies for math and Friday spelling tests. Student may also choose to reread their story from the anthology before taking the selection test. They are encouraged to refer to the story while taking the test.
The Harcourt social studies text has presented our students with exposure to more reading for content. They are learning to navigate through non-fiction by using text structure such as headings, captions, italics, timelines, etc. We also want them to learn the value of additional resources: index, biographical dictionary, and glossary. As we implement more traditional type tests for social studies content, it is not our objective to test for memorization. Our goal is to teach strategies for using their resources effectively. Therefore, the tests will allow them to use their books and practice books. We want them to show their ability to use text and all its components, an essential skill for independent learners.
Students may not use their notes or book during science tests. However, they have detailed study guides to prepare.
Our Play, The Emperor’s New Clothes
We’ll be doing our play earlier this year, November 24. Specific performance times are included in the calendar of events below.
|
Science: We loved our trip to the Tessman Planetarium at Santa Ana College. We saw “Where Are You?” which is one of five programs offered. The Planetarium makes presentations on Saturdays ($6.00 each) You can call (714) 564-6356 to inquire about times and reservations.
At the conclusion of the sun, moon, and stars unit, the third graders will begin a science and technology unit on inventions. Social Studies: Students will learn the history of the American Indian nations in our state. Indians developed cultures in which they used the land to meet their needs. We will focus on how geography affected the way they lived. This unit will culminate with our visit from Jacque Nunez, a tribal descendent of the Acjachemen Nation from San Juan Capistrano on December 17. Many volunteers will be needed for the basket weaving portion of this event. Contact your child’s teacher if you can help out.
Math: Our goal for Unit 2 is for students to develop effective strategies to solve many types of addition and subtraction word problems. Two strategies are math mountains and comparison bars. While the problems of single-digit numbers appear easy, we are focusing on the process of working through the situation. They also are learning to turn situation equations into solution equations. Sounds a lot like algebra!

How to Keep Minds Fit
from Jack O’Connell, California’s Superintendent of Schools1. Play outside. Playing in recreation programs helps fight obesity while encouraging listening, sharing, and respect.2. Get puzzled. Games such as Scrabble or Sudoku encourage thinking and problem-solving.3. Collect. Collecting something, such as stamps or coins, can inspire learning and encourage research.4. Start a journal or scrapbook. These activities encourage organization, writing, and creativity.5. Make daily plans. When children participate in planning the day’s events, they learn responsibility and how to meet deadlines.6. Go grocery shopping. Adding up the bill in advance can help children develop math skills.7. Cook. When students work with ingredients, they practice math and reading skills.8. Read. Learn and discover through words.9. Create a job. Doing jobs can help children learn responsibility.
10. Volunteer. Learn about responsibility and sacrifice.
