PLACEMENT TESTING GENERAL INFORMATION (Updated 6.16.2014)

CURRENT IUSD STUDENTS:

Current IUSD 6th and 7th graders will complete their required math testing in class during school hours under their teacher's supervision. Tests are administered in May and June and results will be available prior to the last day of school. Contact jocelynjazwiec@iusd.org for summer test scheduling.

NEW STUDENTS TO IUSD:

Students who are new to IUSD and will be entering either 7th Grade or 8th grade are required to test for math placement. The tests are held during the summer before school starts.

New students must register for these tests! Please email jocelynjazwiec@iusd.org or call 949-936-5057 to register, or for questions.

Testing Location: Rancho San Joaquin Middle School - 4861 Michelson Drive, Irvine, CA 92612

PLEASE NOTE: Students may test in either Round 1 or in Round 2, but not both. For example: An incoming 7th grade student who passes the Middle School Math Acceleration Test on July 21st and wishes to sit for the Algebra Acceleration Test must do so on July 24th.

PLEASE NOTE: Students new to IUSD have only once chance to take the test.

ROUND 1

For new Year Round Calendar students or for Traditional Calendar students enrolled by July 25 only. Or for current year-round students and traditional calendar students eligible for a re-take.

PLACEMENT TEST DETAILS (Updated 6.16.2014)

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH ACCELERATION TEST (MSMAT)

All students entering 7th grade will be provisionally placed in 7th Grade Common Core Math pending results of the mandatory Middle School Math Acceleration Test (MSMAT).

The test is composed of all open-response items. Students have a maximum of 2.5 hours to complete the test. It will assess California 7th Grade Common Core Standards, which can be found here, pages 46-51.

Scoring will be based on Domains (Cluster Scores) as well as an overall score.

Students who achieve a passing score will be placed in 8th Grade Common Core Math for 7th Grade AND have the opportunity to take the Algebra Acceleration Test (AAT).

Students who do not achieve a passing score will remain in 7th Grade Common Core Math AND have a 2nd chance to take the MSMAT during the summer. (2nd chances apply only to current IUSD students. New incoming students to IUSD have only one chance.)

Students who pass both the MSMAT and the AAT will be placed in Algebra 1 for 7th Grade.

ALGEBRA ACCELERATION TEST (AAT)

All students entering 8th grade will be provisionally placed in 8th Grade Comon Core Math pending results of the mandatory Algebra Acceleration Test (AAT). Entering 7th grade students who pass the Middle School Math Acceleration Test (MSMAT) may also take this test.

The test is composed of all open-response items. Students have a maximum of 2.5 hours to complete the test. It is based on California 8th Grade Common Core Standards, which can be found here, pages 52-56.

Scoring will be based on Domains (Cluster Scores) as well as an overall score.

Students who achieve a passing score will be placed in Algebra 1 for 8th Grade.

Students who do not achieve a passing score will remain in 8th Grade Common Core Math AND have a 2nd chance to take the AAT during the summer. (2nd chances apply only to current IUSD students. New incoming students to IUSD have only one chance.)

Honors Geometry is offered in all of our middle schools in 8th grade.

Honors Geometry is a rigorous high school college prep class where students discover geometric properties by experimentation and observation. Expectations for the Middle School Honors Geometry course mirror the expectations for Honors Geometry at all IUSD high schools.

To take Honors Geometry in 8th grade, students must have taken one full year of Algebra 1 in class and received a grade of B or better on all report cards.

Students will receive a formal grade report approximately every six weeks. To be eligible for Honors Algebra 2 in 9th Grade, students must earn a grade of B or better each trimester in Honors Geometry and be recommended by their teacher. Students who do not receive a grade of B or better each trimester may be recommended for either College Prep Algebra 2, a repeat of Honors Geometry, or College Prep Geometry in 9th Grade depending on their grades in Honors Geometry.
