Drug-Free Schools Policy
A district-wide Substance Abuse Prevention Education
Program, to be developed in conjunction with guidelines approved by the State Board of
Education, shall be offered as a comprehensive program of experiences designed to meet the
needs of individual students.
To implement the Board policy, the following
characteristics will provide direction to assure the program meets the requirements of the
Education Code.
- The district-wide Substance Abuse Prevention
Education Program will include and emphasize the importance of developing and
strengthening students self-concept and interpersonal relationships. The program
shall include provisions for student practice in decision-making to improve his/her
problem-solving skills. Typical classroom practices shall provide each student with
opportunities to examine alternatives and/or consequences before making decisions which
involve high risk/low gain behavior.
- Special training sessions, covering all areas of
substance abuse prevention education, will be available for teachers at all grade levels.
In addition, designated classes will be made available for which inservice credit may be
earned.
- All certificated personnel, responsible for
teaching (specific courses in substance abuse) and/or supervising drug dependent or
debilitated students, shall have completed a teacher training program which includes
recognition of symptoms of drug abuse and implementation of classroom procedures designed
to identify and meet the actual causes of such abuse.
- Qualified certificated staff members will be
available to aid and assist students with substance abuse problems through the provision
of counseling services or referral to appropriate counseling and/or medical services.
Students who are drug dependent or drug debilitated shall have their educational programs
reviewed by a school level committee formed for this purpose. It is the responsibility of
this committee to design an individual education program for these students which covers
appropriate educational and counseling strategies. This committee may also make referral
for appropriate psychological and/or medical services.
