Fifth Grade

We are off to a great start for the second trimester! Currently we are finishing up our physical fitness training and will be testing the students in March. We encourage students to be practicing their sit-up and push-up skills at home to prepare for the test. (Practicing should include two sets of 10 or more push-ups and 10 or more sit-ups three times a week--or more!)

During the second trimester, we have implemented the policy of no retakes on any test. The purpose of this policy is to begin the transition to 6th grade.

Here are some updates on what we are currently working on in

5th grade:

MATH: We finished a mini-unit on geometry and currently are beginning our focus on fractions.

READING: Reading groups are going well. The theme of our current unit is "Voices of the Revolution" which ties closely to our upcoming study of the American Revolution.

SCIENCE: Our current unit is a study of the weather on Earth. Students will learn about air currents and wind, air temperature, severe weather, and predicting the weather.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We are finishing the unit "The Fight for a Continent" and beginning our study of life in the colonies. We are looking forward to the favorite 5th grade activity...Colonial Day! It is scheduled for Friday, March 5th and we are currently seeking many parents volunteers for that day. Please return the "Colonial Draft Notice" that was sent home by January 29th and sign up to help us.
