Homework Guidelines

Parents share with children and teachers the responsibility for homework. Homework strengthens school academics and builds student responsibility, as well as mental discipline, essential tools necessary for a productive and fulfilling life.

Forms of homework may include: reinforcement of concepts taught in class, independent practice and application, completion of assigned class work, missed assignments, long-term assignments, enrichment and enhancement of school experiences through related activities at home. In addition to homework some children will have unfinished class work to complete.

Each child should read daily and complete homework. Homework is assigned with the following daily time guidelines:

Kindergarten 10 to 15 minutes
First Grade 10 to 20 minutes
Second Grade 20 to 30 minutes
Third Grade 30 to 40 minutes
Fourth-Sixth Grades 30 to 60 minutes

It is recognized that the type and length of homework assignments must be related to the student’s needs, interest, and maturity. When additional homework is needed to fulfill the above time requirements, oral and silent reading practice is suggested.  If you have any concerns about your child’s homework, please contact your child’s teacher.
