Tardies

All students should arrive at school on time. Important morning announcements and classroom instruction take place within the first few minutes of the school day. If tardy, students must check in at the front office to obtain a late pass before going to class. Tardies are recorded.

Arrival/Dismissal

Students may not be on campus prior to prior to 15 minutes before their school day begins (grades 4-6, 7:55 and grades 1-3, 8:10) and all students must leave directly after school as supervision is not provided.  Kindergarten Parents must supervise their children before the school day begins.  Kindergarten parents and babysitters must meet the teacher at dismissal.  The school grounds/playground are for the sole use of Meadow Park students during the school day, and are not open to pre-schoolers or older/younger siblings during school hours.  Parents need to be on time to pick up their children and all students should go home directly after school.  Please arrange to meet your student at the lunch tables or at the wall near the Kindergarten playground.

Absences

If your child is absent for any reason, call 936-5901 before 9:00 a.m. Leave the child's name (please spell the last name) and the reason for absence. If your child's absence is related to an illness, he/she must be fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.  Parents may request homework by calling the front office by 9 a.m.  The teacher will leave the student’s homework on the office counter for parents to pick up 10 minutes after dismissal.

SDC parents, please also remember to call our transportation department at 949-936-5370.

School Lunch

Hot lunches may be purchased for $3.25.  Pre-payments may be made at school or online through the Lunch Box program at http://www.iusd.org/food.  Checks are to be made out to IUSD Food Services and please include your student’s PIN number on the check. The lunch menu/pizza days may be downloaded at www.iusd.org.  Late lunches are to be properly labeled with child’s and teacher’s names and placed in the blue lunch box in the office.  Students are to check the box, which is taken to the lunch tables each day.

Forgotten Items

We cannot interrupt the classrooms to deliver forgotten items (homework, project items, etc.) Students are not allowed to call home for forgotten items without teacher permission.  Late musical instruments will not be accepted.

Visitors on Campus

All parents/visitors must check in at the front office. If you are picking up your child early for any reason, you will need to sign them out in the office. The office will then contact your child's classroom. Please send a note with your child in the a.m. to give to his/her teacher so they can plan for your child's early dismissal and prepare any necessary homework ahead of time.

Animals on Campus

For the safety and comfort of our students, animals are not allowed on campus, even if they are on a leash or carried. Some children are afraid of animals or may be allergic to them.

Traffic/Pedestrians

Due to the small number of parking spaces, we ask that parents reserve the parking lot for staff only.  To ensure the safety of our students, parents are not permitted to drive through the parking lot for any reason.  Parking is permitted on the west side of Blue Lake South between the posted signs.  A loading zone is between the school driveways and parking is not permitted in this zone.  Drop off children next to the curb.  Do not double park or block the road.  U-turns are illegal on Blue Lake South.  If you have any questions about parking or ticketing, please contact the Irvine Police Department.

Vacation

Your child may take advantage of an “Independent Study” contract when he/she misses five (5) or more days of school. This is the only instance in which we receive money for absent children. Please notify the teacher at least one week in advance of any planned vacation to initiate the Independent Study contract.

Late Arrival

Each student must sign in at the front office if he/she is not in line when the final bell in the morning sounds. Your student will receive a red pass to give to the teacher. We appreciate your making dental or doctor appointments after school hours. However, if you find it necessary to schedule a medical appointment during your child’s class time, please “SIGN OUT” your child in the office. Do not go directly to the classroom for your child at any time. This minimizes the disruption to our instructional program.

Students will be released only to persons designated on the emergency card. For your child’s safety, telephone permission for release to undesignated persons cannot be accepted. Faxed notes are acceptable with your signature.

Walking To and From School

Parents are urged to discuss safety rules and the responsibilities of good citizenship with their children in regard to walking to and from school. The City of Irvine provides crossing guards at Thunder Run/West Yale Loop, Blue Lake South/West Yale Loop, and Early Morn/Blue Lake South.

These points should be stressed:

a. Come directly to school from home.

b. Stay on the sidewalk and walk at all times up to and inside the crosswalks.

c. Cross streets only at the corners and crosswalks and with the crossing guard who is on duty before and after school. To ensure students’ safety and compliance with school rules, written warnings can be issued to students (with or without an adult present) if they cross streets in an unsafe manner.

d. Go directly home after school. Do not talk to strangers.

We highly encourage students to use the supervised crosswalk. Not only is jaywalking dangerous, it is a citable offense by the Irvine Police Department.

Driving and Parking

If you find it necessary to drive your child to school, we ask that you be aware of the safety of all children when driving in the vicinity of the school.

Due to the limited number of parking spaces, we ask that parents reserve the parking lot for staff only.  To ensure the safety of our students, parents are not permitted to drive through the parking lot for any reason.

Parking is permitted on the west side of Blue Lake South between the posted signs. A loading zone is between the school driveways and no parking is permitted in this zone. Drop off children next to the curb. Do not double park or block the road. U-turns are illegal on Blue Lake South. Parking variances will be requested when whole-school events are being held. If you have any questions about parking or ticketing, please contact the Irvine Police Department.

Bicycles

The following guidelines are established to prevent injury or loss of property.

1. Students riding bicycles to school must be in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade.

2. All 3rd through 6th grade students who ride their bicycles to and from school MUST WEAR A BICYCLE HELMET.

3. Bicycles should be licensed through the Irvine Police Department.

4. Each bicycle MUST BE LOCKED.

5. Bikes may NOT be locked to gates or to the bicycle racks located on the east side of the school, near the pool.

6. The bicycle parking area is not supervised the entire day. Riding new, and expensive bicycles with many attachments should be carefully considered.

7. All bicycles must be WALKED while on school grounds and across the driveways to the parking lot.

8. Students should report to the playground immediately after locking up bicycle.

9.Bicycles should be kept in good repair.

Children After School

Children are sometimes asked by a staff member to remain at school after dismissal time. Your children, however, will not be kept after school for more than 10 minutes without your verbal or written permission.

Children attending Rainbow Rising are requested to go there immediately.

Under no circumstances will a child be allowed to enter the school buildings after 4 p.m.

Rainbow Rising Child Care

The Rainbow Rising Child Care Program at Meadow Park Elementary School provides affordable, quality childcare and day camps for elementary school-age children of working parents. The curriculum is designed to enhance self-esteem, and promote an environment that fosters exploration and creativity. Professional staff in a caring, nurturing environment supervises children. The program operates daily, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For further information, please call (949) 651-0678.

During the School Day

Releasing Children During the School Day

If you need to have your child leave school before the regular dismissal time, you must come to the office and sign your child out and the office staff will notify the teacher to send your child to the office. No child is permitted to leave campus at any time during the day, including lunch time, without a designated adult signature listed on the emergency card. Please have your child sign back in at the office if he/she returns to school that day.

Visitors on Campus

Parents are welcome on campus. For the protection of the children, and in respect for the teacher’s instructional responsibilities, please schedule your classroom visit in advance and always sign in with the office personnel. ALL ADULTS (VOLUNTEERS OR VISITORS) WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN IN AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE, regardless of visit's length, and pick up a visitor's badge which should be worn while at school. Consistent enforcement of this policy is necessary to ensure the safety of all children and staff. Thank you for your cooperation. Any parent without a name badge will be asked to return to the office to sign in.

Lost and Found

A lost and found cart is located outside the multi-purpose room in the First Grade courtyard.  Parents and students are welcome to check it at any time for lost items.  Office personnel will be happy to help you further.  Lost glasses, retainers, jewelry, etc. are kept in the office.  WE URGE YOU TO LABEL YOUR CHILDREN’S BELONGINGS FOR EASY IDENTIFICATION

Use of Telephones

In case of EMERGENCY, parents may leave a message with one of our secretaries and they will be glad to forward it to your child. Students may not be called from class for the telephone. Please make arrangements for picking up your child on rainy days before your child leaves for school so that there is no confusion as to what your child is to do after school.

Children should also make plans prior to school about visiting friends after school. Children are allowed to use the telephone in case of an EMERGENCY only.

School telephones are reserved for business and emergencies only. Students should plan their day so that it is not necessary to use the office telephone. The use of cell phones is prohibited during school hours.

Field Trip Procedures

Each student must have a completed parent permission slip prior to participating in a field trip. Teachers provide specific instructions for each field trip, usually with the permission form, prior to the event.

Health and Safety

Student Accident and Health Insurance

The school district makes available to parents a low cost accident and health insurance for their children.  Forms are distributed to parents the first day of school.  Additional forms are available in the office.  The desirability of having such a plan can provide benefits and coverage when help is needed.

Medication at School

Any time your child requires medication to be given at school, the medication must be kept in the nurse’s office to be given by school personnel.

LEGALLY, the school requires:

· medication in the original pharmacy bottle, properly labeled by the pharmacist
· parent’s signed consent
· doctor’s signed order.

These forms are included with your First Day Packet to be kept until needed.

Medications must be brought to school by the parent. THESE REGULATIONS APPLY TO PRESCRIPTION AND NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS SUCH AS ASPIRIN AND THROAT LOZENGES. Please do not ask school personnel to administer medication without the above-needed permission forms.
