School Improvement
Northwood Elementary School receives extra funds from the State Department of Education to improve the school’s instructional program. When schools receive these funds, they are required to write a School Level Plan that addresses all curricular areas and several school-wide areas.

Library These resources are available to all students and teachers. We encourage library use through scheduled visits, individual study, library
skills lessons, and literature appreciation.

Computer Lab Teachers take their classes to the lab on a weekly basis for 30 minutes. The computer lab aide funded from general school funds assists the teachers and students with computer assisted instruction.

Other School Programs
English Language Development Program K-6
The English Language Development Program consists of one newcomer class, a primary (K-2). Students receive intensive instruction to develop their skills in English.

Resource Specialist Program (K-6)
This program provides special help to identified students in academic areas. Students qualify for this program through the special education referral process. An individual education plan is written for each student. The Resource Specialist works in cooperation with the classroom teacher.

Speech and Language Program A specially trained and credentialed therapist works with identified students on articulation and language development. Students qualify for this program through the special education referral process.

Counseling Limited counseling services are provided for identified students with school related problems. Students are referred by the principal, the teacher or the parent/guardian.

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Third through sixth grade teachers have received training in specific strategies which address the needs of GATE students. GATE students are clustered within classrooms.

Title I
Northwood School receives extra funds from the Federal Government to assist underachieving students. Additional assistance is offered in reading and mathematics through after school programs and in class intervention models.
