APAAS, an acronym for Alternative Program for Academically Advanced Students, is intended to serve students with a unique, advanced intellectual ability and learning style that requires a specialized academic environment. The structure of the APAAS classroom incorporates more open-ended options for students to demonstrate understanding through application of the core content. Curriculum and instruction go beyond what could be provided in a GATE clustered class, and is designed for students able to learn at an accelerated pace with advanced perspectives on applications of the content.
All students in grades three through five who reside within the Irvine Unified School District boundaries and meet the minimum requirements are eligible to apply to the program.
The minimum requirements for a student to be considered for APAAS are all of the following:
academic achievement in which student has earned a B or higher in all academic subjects on 1st trimester report cards,
CST standardized test scores in proficient or advanced range in both English Language Arts and Math,
The six APPAS sites are:
Byrwood, Deerfield, Eastshore, Santiago Hills, Turtle Rock and Westpark (year round)
