ABOUT S.J.H.S.

In 1981, the Irvine Unified School District’s Independent study program was created as an integral component of the Creekside Alternative High School.  The independent study program has evolved, over time, into its own organization and was named San Joaquin High School by a unanimous Board vote in 1988.

Independent Study is an optional, alternative strategy to traditional classroom instruction.  Students receive one-to one and group instruction.  The requirements are consistent with the school district’s course of study for high school graduation.

Independent Study is open to anyone who wishes to earn a high school diploma.  Students under 18 must have a referral from the counselor at their current high school.  Students from outside the IUSD district must first complete the inter-district transfer process.

Independent Study is not an easier way to earn credits or a quick way to graduate.  It requires self-discipline and a high degree of responsibility.  Students who do not fulfill the requirements are withdrawn from the program. Appropriate referrals are made when the student is under 18.
