MATH FACTS

Research has shown that long-term success in mathematics is closely tied to strong number sense, including fluency with basic facts. The sooner your child becomes fluent with her or his addition and subtraction facts, the better! Addition and subtraction of larger numbers will be much easier to master, and multiplication and division are easier to learn with the support of addition and subtraction fluency. Even algebra, introduced in 4th grade in California, will be easier to learn if your child does not have to use mental energy counting to solve addition and subtraction facts.

Your child will be tested weekly on their Math Facts. It is expected that students study their Math Facts regularly and come to class prepared for testing on your class's designated day.

Since each printer varies, we are unable to give specific printing instructions for the flash cards. However, each set of goals is set up so that the front of the flash cards are the odd numbered pages (1, 3, 5, etc.) and the even numbered pages (2, 4, 6, etc.) are the back of the flash cards. So if your printer has a double-sided printing option, all you need to do is press print. Otherwise, the most effective strategy would be to print all the odd numbered pages first, place these printed pages back into the printer and then print the even pages on the back.

You may want to use thicker paper to prevent seeing through the flash card. You may also choose to print them on a single side of the paper and then glue the printed flash cards onto index cards. It is up to you and your child.

Below are all the resources you need for the program. Please read the parent letter describing Val Henry's Early Number Fluency Program. The letter also includes a breakdown of each goal. Please DO NOT work ahead on the goals. Your child must master each goal one at a time sequentially. So if your child is on Goal 3 Addition, then focus on mastery of that goal until your child passes it in class. Finally, please explore and take advantage of the online resources and at-home activities that make learning Math Facts fun.

This program will also be discussed in detail during Parent Conferences.
