Text Box: China’s dynasties

China has had many dynasties during its time. The very first was the Shang. The Shang dynasty was the first dynasty that created a system of written language, write to the gods through oracle bones, and have respect in a family so the ancestor’s spirits could bring good fortune. The Zhou dynasty began when they defeated the Shang. They invented the dynastic circle and the Mandate of Heaven. They also ruled with Feudalism; where the lords would protect and serve the king in return for protection of the land that they owned. As more people came and lived on the lord’s lands, the lord didn’t need the king’s help as much. The greater population could protect itself. The kings struggled for power and this turned into the time of the warring states. After that time was ended by the 3 philosophies, the Qin dynasty came into power. Qin ruler Shi Huangdi was a legalist, meaning that he thought harsh punishments were needed to make people afraid to do wrong. He despised Confucianism and burned books that contained ideas that he didn’t like. But he did some good accomplishments as well, such as building the great wall of China. He was buried with an army of terra cotta warriors blocking his pit. The last dynasty was the Han dynasty. That dynasty didn’t make many accomplishments, but China was expanded under the many rulers of the Han.
