Frequently Asked Questions
Click here to see photos from our Woodbury Groundbreaking Event on August 10, 2006.

  1. What is the scheduled start of construction?

The target date for ground breaking is the Spring 2006. From ground breaking to completion typically requires 15-18 months.

  2. What is the scheduled opening date for students?

The target date for relocating to the new school is October 2007. It is worth noting that it is not uncommon for circumstances such as weather and delay in state approvals to cause the actual date to be later than targeted.

  3. What will be the physical size and student capacity of the new school compared to the current ECR facility?

ECR currently has a gross permanent capacity of 620. The new school will accommodate 700 students in permanent construction and up to 900 students in relocatable classrooms as needed, per School Board Policy.

  4. What will be the name of the new school?

The Board of Education has stipulated that the schools scheduled to “relocate” will move with the school name, awards, philosophy and practices in place. Principal Lauren Sipelis is forming a school committee composed of staff and parents to make recommendations on important issues related to opening the new school. Based on committee recommendations, the School Board voted to name the new school Woodbury Elementary.

  5. Will the new school be on a year-round calendar schedule?

Yes, the new school will continue to be on a year-round schedule. Year-round schools in Irvine begin the last week in July and finish the school year at the same time as the traditional calendar schools in June. Both year-round and traditional calendar schools have 180 days of instruction.

  6. Will the new school be a K-5 or K-6 school?

The new school will open as a K-6 school. It will become a K-5 school when the new 6-8 middle school opens in Woodbury. This is estimated to be as early as 2008 or as late as 2010. Sierra Vista, under this plan, would become a 6-8 middle school in the same year.

  7. What will happen to sixth graders when ECR transitions to a K-5 school?

Students entering middle school, are assured a seat in the middle school assigned to serve their residential area. This is true regardless of whether the middle school is a 6-8 or a 7-8. In the case of ECR legacy students who are not served by a 6-8 middle school, they will be assured a seat at the new Woodbury Middle school. The sibling rule would also be in place.

  8. Will ECR students be assured a spot at the new school?

Yes, students enrolled at ECR at the time of the relocation (legacy students), as well as their siblings, will be assured a spot at the new school.

  9. Will there be bussing?

No bussing is planned at this time.

  10. Will current ECR programs continue at the new site?

Those programs which are funded with state or federal monies will continue as long as the funds are available. Programs sponsored by the PTA will continue based on PTA funding decisions.

  11. Will all current ECR staff move to the new site?

All staff members of ECR at the time of the relocation will be given the opportunity to continue as a staff member at the new location.

  12. Will SIP & PTA monies transfer to the new site?

Yes, all categorical and PTA monies will follow the school to the new location. Some federal program funding, such as Title I, may be affected by the population of students at the new site; however, it is expected that most funding will remain in place as the school opens.

  13. Will there be only one entrance into the parking lot?

There will be two parking lots; one for parents/volunteers/visitors, and one for staff. There will be a separate entrance for each. Specifics as to how the parking lots will be organized will be determined by the site administration and the transition committee.

  14. Will there be lights in the parking lot?

At this time, there are no plans for lights.

  15. Will there be parking on the streets surrounding the school?

There is no decision on this yet; restrictions will be decided with the city.

  16. Will there be routes for students walking/biking to school?

All of the access ways have the opportunity for kids not to cross any driveways. Striping plans will be announced at a later date. The need for, funding for and location of any crossing guards is determined by the City of Irvine.

  17. Will student restrooms be inside or outside?

Student restrooms will be located in each pod and accessible from both the inside and outside, with the capability of locking the restroom from the outside during the day. Students will not have to go outside to use them. Students entering restrooms from inside the building will not be able to exit to the outside. Kindergarteners will have separate facilities, as will the staff. On the week-ends, restrooms can be unlocked from the outside to provide access to organized activities, but locked so that access is denied to the remainder of the building.

  18. What will the school hours be?

A decision will be made with the ECR/ Woodbury Transition Committee.

  19. What Child Care facility will be on site?

The Child Development Center presently at ECR will follow to the new site. It will be located next to the kindergarten area and will have a separate drop-off location.
The City of Irvine will also offer an after school program to ECR students.

  20. Where will the Woodbury Middle School be located?

It will be located in the Woodbury development.

  21. If a student attends Woodbury Elementary in 6th grade, are they assured enrollment at Woodbury Middle School for 7th and 8th grades?

    Yes.

  22. Is there a possibility that Woodbury Middle School will be year-round?

Probably not, since the middle school will serve elementary schools that are on traditional calendar as well.

  23. What high school will Woodbury Middle School students attend?

High school enrollment is based on the student’s residence. Preliminarily, it is anticipated that residents of Woodbury will be assigned to Irvine High School. Likewise, a resident of Woodbridge who may have enrolled at the Woodbury Middle School will be assigned to Woodbridge High School. IUSD has an open enrollment policy, and students can apply to attend a high school outside their assigned attendance area, if space is available. Final boundary decisions will be addressed by the Board in the near future.

  24. Will the new site have APAAS and/or Special Ed. classrooms?

The location of district programs is determined by the Board.

  25. Will the new school be called an alternative school?

The new Woodbury school will be a neighborhood school. Woodbury/ECR can still fill seats through open enrollment, however.

  26. What will happen to the ECR facility?

The property may be sold. However, a Board appointed, state-required community committee will make a recommendation to the Board.
